El Rock Alternativo engloba muchas bandas cada una con sus particularidades.  

Bandas precursoras e influyentes: The Byrds, The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who.     

Otras influencias: Post-punk, Folk Rock, música de los años 60, New Wave.

GENEROS

Jangle Pop: Movimiento nacido a principios de los años 80, es un rock alternativo con claras influencias del rock de los años 60. Los principales referentes fueron The Smiths, R.E.M y The Pretenders. 

Indie Rock: Nace en los 80 de bandas independientes que salían de discográficas pequeñas que les permitían libertad creativa y posibilidad de experimentación.

Indie Pop: Fusionan el indie rock con el pop. Algunas bandas del Indie Rock también evolucionan, mezclan o alternan este con el  indie Pop. 

Paisley Underground: Subgénero del Indie Rock, surgió en los Angeles en los 80, de bandas que venían muchas de ellas del punk. Mezcla de musica retro de los 60, del Garaje Rocky del Pop.
